“He don’t know me vewry well, do he?”

—Bugs Bunny, cartoon character

MAKE IT A FAMILY, NOT A TEAM

Try this: think of your employees as a family, not a team. Family is much more definable than team—especially as it relates to roles. Family has a much better feeling of belonging and much stronger as it pertains to tasks and responsibilities. And a family can have a few misfits who can do a great job without feeling like outcasts.

I have found, that if I treat my employees the same as I treat my children and grandchildren, they have a greater sense of belonging and feel more appreciated. I give them “protected, fun, educational, living” benefits, just like I would my kids: memberships in AAA so they don’t get stuck on the side of the road at night with a flat tire, Sam’s Club and Costco memberships, memberships in the YMCA so they can exercise and be healthy. And, of course, we have parties and outings. We celebrate. And every celebration makes us a better family.

“And here’s a bonus thought as you try to move your company to a new level of excellence: Treat your employees BETTER than you treat customers. If you do this, every employee will be in a mood to provide service excellence as a way of life, rather than a chore.”
