10.14 MOVING THE DESIGN FORWARD

Reports tend to be weighty things and are seldom read in detail by managers. Management summaries help but I believe that the best way to get your design proposals accepted is to make a presentation to the approvers. You can say so much more in a short space of time than you can possibly get across in a report or design document that you should grasp this opportunity with both hands. If the opportunity is not there then make it be there!

All the normal rules about presentations apply; keep it short, no more than thirty minutes with time for discussion afterwards; spend time planning the presentation and rehearse it earlier; be positive. If possible, go in with organizational backing and if you have set up a Metrics Coordination Group you have the perfect vehicle for this by getting their approval for the design proposals. You may also get organizational backing by getting prospective customers to approve your design solutions. You may even be able to get at least one senior manager so committed that he or she actually makes the presentation. This is ideal but try to make sure that you are there to provide technical support and to take the flak.

Once your design solutions have gone through the approval process you are ready to start the build stage of the program. Of course, operating in the real world you may have a number of sub-projects running in parallel. You may find it easier to take the design solution for each of these through review independently and, perhaps, at different times. If this happens, then take care to ensure that you do have designs for those parts of the program that affect the whole initiative, e.g., the business plan, ready for the first review.
