9.12 IDENTIFY STORAGE, ANALYSIS AND FEEDBACK REQUIREMENTS

Almost all requirements associated with a Software Metrics program imply the need to store, analyze and feedback information. Taking a first stab at the scale of these tasks for each of the identified requirements is another way of determining what you will tackle in Phase 1, what you will put off until Phase 2 and the requirements you will do everything in your power never ever to tackle!

You need to ask questions like, "how much data will I have to collect and from how many sources?" "Are we talking about simple trend analysis on one independent variable or are we going to get involved in multi linear regression analysis on fifteen variables?" And if you are, then remember you will need a great deal of data and that will take time to collect. Is it really a good idea to do this during Phase 1 when you need to demonstrate some quick results? Also consider, "how many customers do I need to feed information back to, in what form and at what cost?" For example, if you are talking about senior management reporting you will need to spend time ensuring that you present your results in a businesslike and professional way possibly using desktop publishing facilities. Can you get a budget for this in Phase 1 even assuming that you can get sufficient data to derive meaningful summaries?

Some people will argue that we are entering into the design stage but you need to get some idea of what is involved in satisfying a requirement to be able to decide whether it will be satisfied immediately.
