13.5 IMPLEMENTATION

13.5 IMPLEMENTATION

Implementation is all about people and this brings its own class of problems. The rules for mitigating the effects of these problems are simple and are often seen as common sense. Common sense is not easy to acquire at the start of a project but these guidelines or rules may help, Figure 13.10.

You will need to sell the metrics program to your customers, that is to your colleagues and associates. To help these people to implement the components that form your measurement initiative you will have to provide training and procedures or, if you prefer, written guidance addressing the application of measurement. You may well have to make changes to your generic solutions to make them valid for a specific environment. You can view this as tailoring a basic pattern to provide a bespoke service to your customers.

Having done all of this you still cannot walk away. You must help your customers to use, on a day to day basis, the strategies you have provided. This means holding their hands, it means visiting them regularly, listening to concerns and, above all else, helping them to feedback the results of their efforts to their local managers and to the organization in a way that facilitates process improvement, Figure 13.11.
