Link Warnings

At times, you'll notice a little bug icon next to a page or folder in the Status column of the site window. This is an indication that there is a broken link on the page, or in the case of a folder, the broken link is on a page inside the folder.

To troubleshoot the broken link, open the page and then click the Show Link Warnings button on the Main toolbar (the bug). Errors on the page are highlighted in red (see Figure 9.63), making it easy to identify the trouble spot and then correct it by relinking it in the Inspector palette.

If you do not immediately see the highlighted error, take a look at the arrow that opens the head section. If that is highlighted, it means that the error is contained in the head portion of the page. You can toggle open the head portion, select the highlighted icon, and make your correction.

Link warnings show not only in Layout mode, but also in Outline mode, which is often the simplest avenue toward finding and fixing the error.

In & Out Links Palette

The In & Out Links palette has got to be one of the most powerful Web maintenance tools ever developed. When a page has a bug in the status bar, use the In & Out Links palette to help correct the error. Select the page in the Files list of the site window, and then click the In & Out Links button on the Main toolbar.

The In & Out Links palette opens and displays a diagram of all the links going into and out of the selected page. Look carefully at the icons, and you'll likely find one with a question mark on it. Click the icon with the question mark, which causes the In & Out Links palette to display all links coming into and out of the file in question. Then fix the link by grabbing the Fetch URL tool next to the file in error and pointing and shooting at the correct file in your site window (see Figure 9.64). When you let go, the reference updates the path and corrects the reference.
