Efficient Web Design

Above and beyond the Web-specific features that we've discussed in this chapter, like using Web-safe colors and the Pixel Preview mode, there are other features and strategies that you can employ to achieve more efficient Web design.

When you're designing Web graphics that will eventually be exported as PSD files to be edited in Photoshop or ImageReady, be sure to use layers to organize your artwork in a meaningful way. Because layers can be preserved when exporting to Photoshop, you will be able to perform edits and add functionality easily when different elements of your design are easily accessible. Pixel-based applications like Photoshop rely heavily on the organization of layers and functions like assigning rollovers or other interactivity and are based on layers as well. Refer to Chapters 8 Mixing It Up: Working with Vectors and Pixels, and 12, Saving and Exporting Files, for more information on exporting Illustrator files in the PSD file format.

By using symbols, you can achieve tremendous file size savings when you are creating Web graphics for export in the SWF and SVG file formats. When you use symbols in your artwork, you can repeat a graph many times, but only one original copy of that artwork is stored within the file. When designing maps, creating animations, or using other designs that incorporate repeating graphics, it's well worth the effort to find excuses to use symbols. Refer to Chapter 5, Brushes, Symbols, and Masks, for more information on how to create, use, and edit symbols in your artwork.

Using layers is extremely important when created SVG graphics as the format relies heavily on object hierarchy.
