Exam Highlights

Before taking the exam, review the key topics and terms that are presented in this chapter. You need to know this information.

Key Points

  • When sharing a folder on a network with Simple File Sharing enabled, you cannot choose who can and cannot access a folder. When you share a folder with Simple File Sharing disabled, you give permission for everyone on the network to access and read the files in the folder.

  • Combining permissions can be confusing. First figure out the NTFS permissions that a user has by combining the permissions of all the groups in which the user is a member and taking the least restrictive combination. Next figure out the share permissions on the object in the same way—by combining the share permissions of the groups in which the user is a member and taking the least restrictive combination. (Again, a Deny permission for any group yields a Deny permission for the user.) Finally, combine the NTFS and share permissions, and take the most restrictive combination of those two. And remember, being denied access at any level or from any group means that the user is denied access in the end.

Key Terms

Active Directory A centralized database that contains information about a network’s users, workstations, servers, printers, and other resources. Active Directory (found on a domain controller) determines who can access what and to what degree. Active Directory is essential to maintaining, organizing, and securing the resources on a larger network; it allows network administrators to centrally manage resources; and it is extensible, meaning that it can be configured to grow and to be personalized for any company.

FAT See file allocation table.

file allocation table (FAT) A type of file system used by older computers to organize the files and folders on the computer. FAT organizes the files on the computer so that they can be accessed when they are needed.

NTFS A type of file system used by newer computers that is much more advanced than the FAT file system. NTFS provides advanced file and folder permissions, encryption, disk quotas, and compression. NTFS is supported by Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

Windows Installer A core component of IntelliMirror, which is used to deploy applications across a domain. Windows Installer is used to install applications and to manage user installation options.
