Troubleshooting Lab

In this lab, you will optimize the performance on your computer by configuring settings in Windows XP. You will then use the Performance tool to monitor system performance.

To perform this lab, follow these steps:

  1. Check your computer for any unnecessary background applications that may be running, particularly in the notification area. Use the programs’ interfaces or the Msconfig command to disable the unnecessary applications. Be careful when using Msconfig that you disable only applications that are truly unnecessary. When in doubt, do not disable an application. Also, you should disable only one application at a time so that you can gauge the effect on your computer.

  2. Use Disk Cleanup to free up hard disk space on your computer.

  3. Use the Chkdsk command to scan your hard disk for errors.

  4. Use Disk Defragmenter to analyze and, if necessary, defragment your disk.

  5. Use the Performance Options dialog box to disable any visual effects that you find unnecessary.

  6. Start the Performance tool and log your computer’s performance for at least four hours under normal usage using the following objects and counters:

    • Memory: Pages/sec

    • Paging File (_Total): % Usage

    • Processor: %Processor Time

    • System: Processor Queue Length

    • Physical Disk: Disk Reads/sec

    • Physical Disk: Disk Writes/sec

    • Physical Disk: Avg. Disk Queue Length
