Deleting Stores or Storage Groups

Before you can delete a store or storage group, you must first remove its contents. Therefore, you’ll need to delete your mailbox and public folder stores before deleting a storage group.

Deleting a Mailbox Store

Before you delete a mailbox store, you should first back up all its data to ensure that you can later restore any important information that was inadvertently deleted. After finishing your backup, make sure that you have moved to another store any mailboxes you need to keep. If you’re going to delete only one store, you can move its mailboxes to another store in the same storage group. Of course, if you’re planning to delete the entire storage group, plan to move the mailboxes to a store in a different storage group. You can delete the mailbox store by right-clicking it in the Exchange System snap-in and choosing Delete.

If any messages in the SMTP queue are awaiting outbound delivery, you will receive an error message informing you of this circumstance. If you choose to delete anyway, you will be given the option of selecting a new store to be used as the inbound queue for the SMTP messages.

Deleting a Public Folder Store

Deleting a public folder store is a bit more complicated than deleting a mailbox store. First, the store you are deleting must not be the last or only store that contains the public folder tree. If it is, you will not be able to delete the public folder store. Second, this store must not be the default public folder store for any mailbox stores or users. To determine whether this is the case, you’ll need to look at the property sheet of each mailbox store to see if any of them are using the store you want to delete as their default public folder store. If any are, you’ll want to reconfigure the mailbox store to use a different default public folder store. Third, if the public folder store to be deleted maintains the only replica of one or more folders, you will receive a warning that all data will be lost if you do not first replicate the data to another store.

Deleting a Storage Group

When there are no longer any stores associated with the storage group, you can delete it by right-clicking the group in the Exchange System snap-in and choosing Delete.
