Exchange Server 2003 supports a wide variety of clients, including Outlook, Outlook Express, Outlook Web Access, Exchange Client, Schedule+, and standard Internet e-mail clients. Outlook 2003 is the current standard client for Exchange Server 2003 because it provides the most functionality and is the clear upgrade path for forthcoming Exchange clients.
Outlook Express is a capable client for Exchange Server 2003 as long as the server supports the POP3 or IMAP4 protocol. Outlook Web Access is a good client to use when your organization supports non-Windows-based clients such as UNIX and Macintosh, or when your users need to access the server over the Internet. The new version of Outlook Web Access makes great strides in becoming more useable. Exchange Client and Schedule+ are still functional alternatives in the Exchange environment, although upgrading to Outlook gives you more functionality. The next chapter takes a more in-depth look at deploying and using Outlook 2003.
