Yellow DoorThis door presented itself to me each morning as I left my Siena hotel. The first few times I noticed it, there was something that prevented me from setting up the shot; either the light wasn't quite right, or I was rushing to another site that I had somehow determined was more important. Finally, as I was returning to the hotel one afternoon, my patience (or perhaps procrastination) was rewarded. The sun was streaming into the narrow alley, bouncing off the opposite wall, creating a warm, diffuse glow. I set up my tripod and cable release and captured a bracketed set of images, ultimately settling on this one that was captured at 1/10 second at f/8.0. Yellow Door The speck of blue string on the key, along with the subtle blue under-painting on the door really sets this image apart. In addition, I liked the horizontal and vertical divisions, along with the unique shapes that dictate the composition. As I was setting up, I was very careful to get the vertical and horizontal lines parallel with the edges of the frame. To make this happen, I had to keep the rear plane of the camera parallel to the door surface, ensuring that the lines wouldn't reveal any shifting perspective. |
