The Layers Palette

1.

Open the Two Trees file.

2.

Select Image, Canvas Size. In the dialog box that appears, click the top center anchor box and change the height dimension from 1578 to 2513. Click OK to increase canvas size.

3.

Open the Tree Bark file and copy and paste it into the composite image.

4.

Select Image, Canvas Size. In the dialog box that appears, change the vertical dimension to 2513 pixels, click to place the anchor box at the top center, and click OK to add canvas to the bottom of the frame.

5.

Create a selection in the lower rectangle with new canvas and click the Add Layer Mask button in the Layers palette.

6.

Click the chain link icon between the image and the mask thumbnail in the Layers palette to deactivate it. Drag the image with the Move tool to position the bark texture within the rectangle.

7.

Click the foreground color swatch and select black from the Color Picker. Click the background color swatch and set the background color to white.

8.

Click the Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers palette and choose Gradient Map from the drop-down menu. Name the layer B&W Gradient Map and click OK in the dialog box that appears to apply the gradient.

9.

Hold down the Option key (Alt key in Windows) and click the line between the Two Trees layer and the adjustment layer to create a clipping mask, restricting the gradient to the Two Trees layer.

10.

Click the Tree Bark layer in the Layers palette and drag it to the New Layer icon at the bottom of the palette to duplicate the layer. Name the new layer Tree Bark Blur.

11.

With the mask link still deactivated, select the Move tool and recompose the Tree Bark Blur layer within the lower rectangle.

12.

Choose Filter, Blur, Motion Blur. In the dialog box that appears, set the Angle to 0° and move the distance slider to 560 pixels. Click OK.

13.

Set the Tree Bark Blur layer's opacity to 78% and select Difference from the Blending Mode drop-down menu at the top of the Layers palette.

14.

Open the Birch Panorama file and copy and paste it into the composite.

15.

Choose Image, Free Transform. Press the Shift key and drag a corner handle to reduce the width to the same size as the composite. Drag the Birch Panorama layer to the bottom of the composite and double-click to apply the transformation.

16.

Click the foreground color swatch and select black from the Color Picker. Click the background color swatch, move the cursor into the bark texture area, and click to sample a pale yellow color.

17.

With the Birch Panorama layer still active, choose Image, Adjustment, Gradient Map. Click OK in the dialog box that appears to apply the gradient map directly to the active layer.

18.

In the Layers palette, drag the Birch Panorama layer between the bark and blur layers and set the opacity of that layer to 78%.

19.

Select the Clone Stamp tool and Option-click to set the reference point on the central tree in the lower image area. Paint to extend the tree up to the Two Trees area. Reset the reference point and paint in the tops of the trees on the left side of the lower image area.

20.

Select Gradient Map from the Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers palette. Click the gradient strip in the Gradient Map dialog box to launch the Gradient Editor.

21.

Double-click the color stop on the left side of the gradient bar and enter the RGB values R106, G96, B79 in the dialog box that appears. Double-click the right color stop and select black as the color to replace the highlights. Name this layer Mocha Gradient Map and click OK.

22.

Open the Assumption of the Virgin photo.

23.

Select a single dot in the skirt pattern, using the Magic Wand tool with the Tolerance value set to 7. Choose Select, Similar to select the remaining dots in the pattern. Copy the resulting selection and paste it into a new file.

24.

Select the Eraser tool and erase any unwanted pixels from the pattern as necessary.

25.

Copy the image and paste it into the composition, dragging it into position in the upper-right corner. Rename the layer Assumption o/t Virgin.

26.

Click the Add a Mask icon in the Layers palette to add a mask to the Assumption layer.

27.

Select a brush with black as the foreground color, and set the Opacity value in the toolbar to 59%. Paint various sections on the Assumption layer mask to achieve the final atmospheric effect and complete the image.
