Interorganizational Information Network Systems and Standardization

Today, the organizational environment is turbulent and its speed of change gets faster and the degree of change is greater. Under such a situation, IOR and ION cannot remain static. They are always changing dynamically. Therefore, interorganizational information network systems, which support ION, should meet such dynamic change.

Key to meeting this requirement is "standardization." Standardization of interorganizational information network system is that of platforms, application software, network protocols, and business protocols, etc. Standardization enables one to reduce switching costs of a network, and, although the effect of enclosure that the strategic information system aimed at is reduced, rearrangement of the network gets easier.

The problem is to what extent standardization should be carried out. Especially constraint of the best information system for specific business is specific business process and protocols. So, a fully standardized information system is not optimal for a specific business environment. In the light of effectiveness and efficiency, such a system tends to specialization.

In open-edi, which is not limited to specific customers, minimum standardization is carried out in order to enhance the generality of a system, and required parts for trade of specific customers are added on to a standardized system.

In considering an interorganizational information network system, in case IOR is in a turbulent environment and frequent rearrangement is needed, the level of standardization should be of infrastructure in order that the interorganizational information network system may have flexibilities. On the contrary, in case IOR is in a stable environment and frequent rearrangement is not needed, the level of standardization should be carried out to the level suitable for specific business.

By the way, considering security control of an information network system, in ION, situations such as "yesterday's friend is today's enemy, or vise versa" often happen; so timely and precise measures of access control should be taken. Quick alteration of passwords, access rights, and encryption rules, etc., should be modified in accordance with the rearrangement of dynamically changing ION.
