Network Testing Procedures

With the NLB service successfully installed, the Fabrikam team can begin streaming content over the LAN. The following checklist summarizes the setup of the server and closed LAN.

  • Install server hardware. Install the NICs, add memory if necessary, and install the hard drives.

  • Configure the hard drives.

  • Install server software. Install Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, and then install Windows Media Services. The Windows Media Services snap-in is installed on the encoding computer.

  • Configure encoding and client computers. Install Windows Media Encoder 9 Series, a video capture card, and a NIC on the encoding computer. Attach an audio and video source, such as a camcorder, VCR, or TV tuner. Install Windows Media Load Simulator, Windows Media Player 9 Series, and a NIC on the client computer.

  • Configure networking on all computers. Add static IP addresses and make all computers members of the same workgroup (LAN). Create a common user with administrative permissions on all computers. The technicians will create an additional user when they test security.

  • Configure NLB on the servers. Open NLB Manager on the encoding computer, and then create a new cluster, adding the three servers as hosts.

  • Connect the computers and check connectivity.

In the next part of the bench configuration, the technicians will run the following tests:

Test Number

Test Name

Description

Test #1

On-demand Load

Stream multiple Windows Media files.

Test #2

Broadcast Unicast Load

Stream a broadcast to multiple clients using unicast connections. Then stream a mix of on-demand and broadcast streams.

Test #3

Multicast

Stream a broadcast to a client using multicast. Then stream a mix of ondemand and multicast content.

Test #4

Security

Restrict access to a publishing point using authentication and authorization. If necessary, add a domain controller to test NTLM or Kerberos authentication. Test #4 will use a security method that does not require a domain controller.

Test #5

Unicast broadcast playlist with wrapper

Stream a broadcast playlist with a wrapper to multiple clients.

Test #6

Windows Media Services Administrator for the Web

Open and examine the Web administrator interface.

Note that it is not essential that you run all or any of these tests. The purpose of the tests is to check the basic configuration, to establish a performance baseline, to confirm performance expectations, and to try different settings offline.

During testing, the Fabrikam technicians will accomplish the following tasks:

  • Confirm that everything works.

  • Configure the Windows Media server to deliver on-demand and broadcast streams to clients.

  • Analyze test results and make configuration changes if necessary.

  • Configure IIS, if necessary. If you added the Multicast and advertisement logging agent and Windows Media Services for the Web during Windows Media Services installation, IIS is also installed and configured automatically for handling these features. If changes were made to IIS after the installation, however, the features may have to be configured manually.

  • Configure the server for logging unicast and multicast connections.

  • Configure security for Windows Media Services Administrator for the Web.

  • Test streaming a broadcast playlist with a wrapper.
