Acknowledgements

While our names are on the cover, this book really is the result of months of collaboration among many talented and enthusiastic people. We offer our deepest thanks and appreciation to all of them.

A special thanks goes to Robert van Schooneveld who not only reviewed the entire book while out-waiting a power outage in the middle of winter, but continuously checked in to offer his assistance and encouragement, wrote scripts and code samples whenever requested, and spent many an afternoon on the phone fleshing out scenario details that were both compelling and realistic.

Many thanks also to Michael Wagner of Approach, Inc. Michael focused his enormous talents on the enterprise section of this book and sought to infuse us with his vast knowledge gained from many years in the streaming media business. He demonstrated great patience with all of our questions and brought credibility to the material that we could not have achieved without him.

We were fortunate to have drawn upon the expertise of many partners and third-party contributors. We offer our thanks to Gary Price and Tony Greenberg of Ramprate; Steve Lerner, of Speedera; Geoff Brousseau, of Playstream; and Michael (Chi Hung) Chiu and Kevin Headley. We also appreciate the assistance of our in-house experts at MS Studios, Jim Balazic and Mark Beauchamp.

It has been a pleasure to work the talented and professional people that made up our project team. Terrence Dorsey, our editor, guided us patiently and persistently, using wisdom gained from previous book projects. Paul Johnson, our artist, tackled our enormous list of art requests without hesitation. Harry Goodwin, John Green, Travis Wilson, and Keith Gabbert pulled together our companion CD into the cohesive package that it is today. Greg Lovitt painstakingly converted our text and graphics into a print-ready package, despite our occasional complaints about fonts and formats. Kari Rosenthal Annand, our indexer, carefully read through our material to create an index that was both comprehensive and concise. Starr Andersen put other projects aside in order to lend her subject expertise and writing talents to chapter 23. Our management, Gail McClellan and Tom Woolums, gave us their support and encouragement, allowing us the time and resources we needed to tackle a project of this size. We also extend a thank you to Microsoft Press, especially Alex Blanton and Aileen Wrothwell, for their gentle guidance and support.

We are also grateful for the crucial contributions of Alexandre Ferreira, Chris Knowlton, Matt Lichtenberg, Marc Melkonian, Michael Patten, Joe Powell, Andrea Pruneda, Dave Roth, Jim Travis, Justine Vick, Jennifer Winters, David Workman, and Lan Ye.

And finally, we are grateful to all the members of the Windows Media team for embracing this project. We are continually awed by their talents.
