Mistake 7: Assuming You Can Implement the RUP Perfectly the First Time

Transitioning to a new process such as the RUP takes time and practice. It is a challenge that requires a cultural change for both the project team and the customer. If you can, it is best to avoid making this transition at the same time (and on the same project) as your customer and stakeholders (hence the suggestion to use an internal project for your first attempt at the RUP).

If you are a project manager embarking upon your first RUP project, note that some of the cultural changes involve your company's management. It is imperative that projects receive management support and commitment toward making this change. This includes allowing the team to make mistakes along the way, learn from them, and regroup. Without management commitment, the shift to the RUP will wither at the first sign of trouble. Don't forget to consider using an experienced consultant to help you with necessary cultural changes. This assistance can be invaluable.
