To Jane, my wife and best friend, for reminding me in so many ways that technology should serve and not control humanity. To my children, Margot, Karl, and Georg, for showing me both how much and how little we influence others. And to everyone who is trying to make our often harsh and nasty world a better place to live in.

To the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who bravely serve our country.

Acknowledgments

It has been just over a year since I got my hands on the Exchange Server 2007 beta 1 software. And what a year it has been. In May 2006, I began talking with Barry Gerber and Tom Cirtin (Wiley acquisitions editor) about contributing to this book.

Along the way, a lot of people have been involved in reviewing the content of this book. I hope that I am remembering everyone who has jumped in and offered advice and constructive criticism along the way. First and foremost is Devin Ganger (3Sharp); when we realized that we were going to run short on time, Devin jumped on board and developed the content for several chapters. As deadlines crunched even further, Exchange MVP Simon Butler and Outlook MVP Ben Schorr also provided content.

During the early development of the book and the first drafts of chapters, a number of Exchange gurus and administrators provided me with feedback on the book's outline, reviewed chapter content, or just answered my questions. These skilled people include William Lefkovics, Todd Hawkins, Ben Craig, Paul Robichaux, John Fullbright, Chuck Swanson, Cynthia Wang, Desmond Lee, Josh Maher, Omar Drubi, Peter O'Dowd, Rich Matheisen, Glen Scales, Bob Christian, David Elfassy, Mark Watts, Andy Schan, Nick Gillott, Vlad Mazek, Rick Taylor, Konrad Sagala, Bob Lawler, Daniel Petri, Andy David, Missy Koslosky, Mark Arnold, Pavel Nagaev, Andy Webb, Bharat Suneja, Elizabeth Owusu, Damion Jones, and Siegfried Jagott. My hat is also off to the hundreds of people I have talked to at conferences and events over the past year who have given me ideas for topics and how things can be better explained.

As with any new product, often not much public information is available prior to its release. Many people at Microsoft patiently and carefully explained new concepts to me and answered questions. These good folks include Kevin Miller, Paul Bowden, David Espinoza, Scott Schnoll, Ross Smith IV, KC Lemson, David Lemson, Jon Gollogly, Karena Lynch, Ben Winzenz, Tim McMichael, Nino Bilic, Melissa Travers, Harold Wong, and Evan Dodds.

I was also extremely lucky to be able to recommend a technical editor. The most experienced Exchange 2007 person I know outside of Microsoft is Brian Tirch. Since the Exchange 2007 beta 1 cycle, Brian has been running an Exchange 2007 organization with thousands of users.

This book gave me an opportunity to once again work with the great folks at Wiley. These include acquisitions editor Tom Cirtin, development editor Kim Wimpsett, production editor Martine Dardignac, copyeditor Judy Flynn, and proofreader Nancy Hanger. Thanks to all of you for your guidance, sense of humor, and tolerance in the face of deadlines.

Thanks to everyone for all your help. Whatever errors of fact or judgment remain are mine and mine alone.
