The assignment

This template picks up where Project 11 left off. Logic's Song tempo has been adjusted to 85.0658 bpm to match the audio file, now renamed drumkit5.aif. The Audio Region has been adjusted to exactly four bars in the Audio and Arrange windows .

NOTE

The Groove Machine ( Figure P14.1 ) is used to alter the swing, or groove of audio material, in percentage steps. These are based on parameters such as tempo and bar length. Down beats and off beats can also be raised and lowered to alter the feel of a particular groove.

It would be nice if we could alter the swing factor of the audio just as we do with MIDI. Of course, it's possible do this with Logic. The results are not always perfect but with patience a trial and error approach usually yields good results. Let's have a go!

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Sample Editor Open the Groove Machine window [Factory > Groove Machine ...] (Figure P14.1).

    Figure Figure P14.1. Groove Machine

  2. Choose a swing factor. A value of between 55% and 65% works best in most cases.

  3. Choose a Based On Period parameter. In this case it will be 1/16 because of the sixteenth note kick drum fill near the end of the loop. Leave the Down Beat Level and Off Beat Level as it is. It's fine. Ensure that the Corresponds to Tempo parameter matches the Song tempo and that the 'to Bar Length' box displays 4.0.0.0.

  4. Press the Re-Groove button.

  5. Play the result in the Sample Editor. Notice how the kick drum beats have been affected. Experiment with different swing values yourself.

  6. Save Song compare with project14/14.1.
