The assignment

This template picks up where the previous project left off. Logic's Song tempo has been adjusted to 85 bpm to match the audio file, now renamed drumkit2.aif. The Audio Region has been adjusted to exactly four bars in the Audio and Arrange windows . It would be nice, wouldn't it, if we could now adjust our tempo in the normal way and have the audio follow along with it? Well it can be done. Fiddly, yes, but possible. To begin with, the audio has to be sliced up into segments of a suitable length. This process can be likened to that of Propellerheads' ReCycle program.

Follow these steps:

  1. In the Audio window select drumkit2.aif and open the Strip Silence window [Options > Strip Silence]. You will most likely see the audio sliced into sections according to the default settings (Figure P12.1).

Now these settings will probably work, up to a point, but think ahead. The sliced audio is going to be speeded up and slowed down. We therefore need to find the smaller divisions of the beat. Where are they? The obvious ones are at the end of this loop. The sixteenth notes on the kick drum. So ...

  1. In the Strip Silence window gradually increase the Threshold percentage. How far? It's variable. I stopped at 14% (Figure P12.2).

Now, we don't really need any actual silence removed, if possible. We just want a nice set of Regions (slices) to manipulate. So ...

  1. Reduce the Pre-Attack time to 0.0050 and increase the Post Release time 0.3000 (Figure P12.3). We now have a set of 34 Regions that should play pretty smoothly. Let's find out.

  2. Ensure that Search Zero Crossings is checked and press the OK button. Logic will ask you whether or not you want to replace the Regions in the Arrange window. Choose Replace. The Regions are now displayed in the Arrange window.

  3. Save Song compare to project12/12.1.

Experiment with the tempo and you will find that it sounds OK when sped up. Slow it down though and things don't sound so good. Clicks are sounding at the Region boundaries. We'll fix it in Project 13!

NOTE

Another way to slice up the audio into ReCycle style Regions is to use the Scissors from the toolbox (holding down the Option key Alt on PC) and cutting the loop at 1.1.2.1 (the first sixteenth note division). The audio loop will be sliced into sixteenth note Regions.

NOTE

The Strip Silence function allows you to create Audio Regions automatically. Silence is interpreted according to a variable threshold level and removed. New Regions are created from the remaining passages. It has many uses, the most obvious as a noise gate. It can also be used for time compression or expansion (creating segments for drum loops ) and multiple editing such as speech manipulation.
