B.6. Web Browsing: Firefox

Web browsing on the desktop is a business-critical activity, and you have many mature open source web browser alternatives to Internet Explorer to choose from. We recommend using Firefox.

Firefox is a fast, easy-to-use web browser that provides a consistent user interface across multiple platforms. Its main features are:

  • Pop-up blocking through a sophisticated mechanism that blocks unwanted pop-ups while allowing you to see the ones from sites you trust.

  • Tabbed browsing for viewing multiple web sites in tabs of the same window, and the ability to bookmark multiple web sites that can be opened as tabs with one click. It loads tabs in the background to reduce the time users spend waiting for a page to load.

  • Built-in search capability that accesses major search engines (Google, Yahoo!, Amazon, etc.), and the ability to plug in new search engines easily.

  • Live bookmarks that are integrated with RSS.

  • A smart download manager that makes it easy to find downloaded items.

  • The ability to customize it with hundreds of useful extensions.

  • A safe and secure environment, with several built-in controls to help protect users against malicious attacks.

  • Standards compliance with the latest Internet protocols.
