Section 2.4. Redial

2.4. Redial

Many broadband phone companies focus their attention on the telephone, a device their clients are familiar with and want to keep. These phone-centric companies, led by Vonage, provide adapters to connect existing analog telephones to broadband modems.

Other broadband phone companies follow a computer-centric focus, leveraging the powerful peer-to-peer networking model so popular on the Internet. They support telephones, but only new telephones that plug into computers. Existing telephones are replaced by headsets and software phones running on computers.

The incumbent telephone companies are getting into the broadband phone business, but lag far behind the cable TV companies. Every telephone company has deployed or announced Internet Telephony, as has just about every cable TV franchise and many Internet Service Providers.

No matter which option you choose, you'll have phone number flexibility thanks to virtual numbers. And broadband phone companies no longer charge extra for long distance calls within the country, so that's more money saved by switching from your traditional telephone to a broadband phone.
