Book Conventions

We've used a few common conventions within this field guide to help you work with Juniper Networks information and content.

We use marginalia to call attention to references and key topics. These can generally be one of four usages:

  • A cross-reference within this book.

  • A cross-reference to the Juniper Networks documentation. Some are explicit, and some might seem vague depending on the reference itself. For references that seem vague, we suggest using the comprehensive index manual or the book's index to help you find exactly what you need. The documentation undergoes constant change, so we try to provide references that will not go out of date quickly.

  • A cross-reference to other publications such as RFCs.

  • A key idea, concept, or note worthy of calling attention to itself in the margin. Sometimes you'll also find the same information stressed within the text body.

Router and router component labels are shown in a sans serif font, as when Ethernet is the label for the Ethernet management port on a router.

Statements, commands, filenames, directory names , IP addresses, and configuration hierarchy levels are also shown in a sans serif font, as in the following example in which stub is a statement name and [edit protocols osfp area area-id] is a configuration hierarchy level:

To configure a stub area, include the stub management at the [edit protocols ospf area area-id ] hierarchy level.

Options, which are variable terms for which you substitute appropriate values, are shown in italics, as in the following example in which area-id is an option:

 area  area-id;

In examples, text that you type literally is shown in bold. In the following example, you type the word show:

 [edit protocols ospf area area-id] cli# show stub <default-metric metric >

Optional portions of a configuration statement are enclosed in angle brackets. In the following example, the " default-metric metric " portion of the statement is optional:

 stub <default-metric  metric  >;
