Chapter 12 -- Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Cluster Services

3 4

Chapter 12

In recent years, Microsoft SQL Server systems have moved off the desktop, out of the workgroup, and into the back office. As these systems become larger and more critical to business operations, the need has arisen to make them more stable, easier to administer remotely, and more tolerant of failures. To meet this need, Microsoft has devoted a tremendous amount of time and effort to reducing software bugs and improving support. Microsoft has improved administration tools and remote administration capabilities, and it has developed technologies such as Microsoft Cluster Services (MSCS). A cluster is a group of computers that back each other up in the case of malfunction. In this chapter, you'll learn how MSCS works and how to configure it, as well as how to plan for disasters and recover from them. MSCS itself cannot make your system fault tolerant. You must combine this technology with careful planning to make your system capable of recovering from failures.

NOTE

MSCS is included with Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, and Microsoft Windows NT 4 Enterprise Edition.
