Chapter 1 -- Overview of Microsoft SQL Server

Chapter 1

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is a relational database management system (RDBMS). A relational database provides a means of organizing data by storing it in database tables. Related data can be grouped into tables, and relationships can be defined between tables as well—thus the name, relational database. Users access the data on the server through an application. Administrators access the server directly to perform configuration, administrative, and database maintenance tasks. SQL Server is a scalable database, which means that it can store substantial amounts of data and can support many users accessing the data at the same time.

SQL Server came into existence in 1989 and has changed significantly since then. Great improvements have been made to the product's scalability, integrity, ease of administration, performance, and features. In this chapter, we'll look at the two types of environments in which you can use SQL Server. Then we'll look at the new features and enhancements available in SQL Server 2000.
