Recipe 3.27. Troubleshooting CD Autorun Software Installation Problems

Problem

The installation or setup program on a CD-ROM may not automatically run when inserted into a CD-ROM or the DVD-ROM drive.

Solution

Log on to Windows XP as either a power user or an administrator.

Check the properties of the CD-ROM drive to ensure autorun/autoplay is enabled with the following steps:

  1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop, or go to Start then select My Computer.

  2. Right-click the CD-ROM drive listed, then select Properties.

  3. In the Properties dialog, select the AutoPlay tab.

  4. The default may be set to Take No Action for one or more types of CD content. Select the action you want Windows to take when you insert a CD-ROM by specific type, such as music, data, or video.

  5. Click OK to close the dialog and proceed.

Discussion

When a CD-ROM is detected and autorun/autoplay is enabled, Windows XP is notified that a new volume is available and the drive is then checked for the presence of an AUTORUN.INF file in the root directory of the CD-ROM.

Only users who are logged on to Windows XP with power user or administrator rights are allowed to install software. If you have only user-level rights, you will be prompted with an "Install Program as other user" message when the CD-ROM autorun is processed. This behavior is by design or may be controlled by user or group policies by your system administrator.
