At the present time, there is one definitive Ruby newsgroup and several mailing lists. As the community grows, some of these may split into more specialized groups. Many of the existing ones are in Japanese only, and there are also lists in German and French.

comp.lang.ruby

This is the primary newsgroup for the Ruby language. The Japanese language group fj.comp.lang.ruby appears to exist still, but has very little traffic.

ruby-talk

This is the main English language mailing list for general Ruby-related matters. At the present time, it is mirrored with the newsgroup in both directions. This was not always the case, especially because the list is older than the newsgroup. For instructions on joining the list, visit the Ruby home page (www.ruby-lang.org).

ruby-cvs

If you really need to know about changes in Ruby on a daily basis, you can subscribe to the CVS Commit list (requests go to ruby-cvs-ctl@ruby-lang.org).

Japanese Mailing Lists

If you speak Japanese, you may want to know about the following four lists:

  • ruby-list (the main Japanese-language list)

  • ruby-dev (the list for developers working on Ruby)

  • ruby-ext (the mailing list for extension developers)

  • ruby-math (the mailing list for mathematical topics)

Other Mailing Lists

There are two other lists that we know of. By the time you read this, there will be more, so do a Web search.

  • German list (visit www.home.unix-ag.org/tjabo/ruby/index.php3)

  • French list (send request to ruby-fr-ctl@ruby-lang.org)
