Creating and Using a Template


Templates make life so much simpler. After you ve labored over a document that you plan to use over and over again ”like a business card or a newsletter ”you can save it as a template. Then when it s time to create the next one, you need only open the template, replace existing text or images with new ones, and you re done.

In this exercise, you will save a postcard publication as a postcard template. You will then use the template to create a postcard for an upcoming spring sale.

USE the SalePostcard publication in the practice file folder for this topic. This practice file is located in the  My Documents\Microsoft Press\Office 2003 SBS\Creating folder and can also be accessed by clicking Start/All Programs/Microsoft Press/Microsoft Office System 2003 Step by Step .

OPEN the SalePostcard publication.

  1. On the File menu, click Save As .

    The Save As dialog box appears.

  2. In the File name box, type SaleCardTemplate .

  3. Click the down arrow to the right of the Save as type box, and click Publisher Template .

    Publisher automatically changes the Save in location to the Templates directory.

  4. Click Save .

    Publisher saves the postcard template.

  5. On the File menu, click Close .

    The template closes .

  6. On the File menu, click New .

    The New Publication task pane appears.

    Troubleshooting  

    If the New Publication task pane is not open, on the View menu, click Task Pane. If a different task pane is displayed, click the down arrow at the top of the task pane, and click New Publication.

  7. In the New from a design area of the New Publication task pane, click  Templates.

    Tip  

    If there were no templates in your Templates directory when you started Publisher, Templates does not appear in the New from a design area even though you created a template since you started Publisher. If this happens, exit and restart Publisher.

  8. Click SaleCardTemplate .

    A new publication based on the SaleCardTemplate template opens.

  9. Select the first line of text, and type Spring is in the air!

  10. Select the second and third lines of text, and type Find everything you need to make your garden bloom at our Spring sale extravaganza!

  11. On the Formatting toolbar, click the down arrow to the right of the Fill Color button, and click White .

  12. On the File menu, click Save As .

    The Save As dialog box appears.

  13. Navigate to the  My Documents\Microsoft Press\Office 2003 SBS\Creating folder,and in the File name box, type SpringSaleCard .

  14. Click Save .

    Publisher saves the postcard you created based on SaleCardTemplate.

CLOSE the SpringSaleCard publication.
