Creating a Publication for the First Time


The first time you create a publication, Publisher gathers information from you for its personal information set . Four different sets are available:

  • Primary Business

  • Secondary Business

  • Other Organization

  • Home/Family

After you provide the information for these sets, Publisher automatically plugs it into your documents, so you don t have to type it in more than once.

In this exercise, you will complete the Primary Business personal information set for The Garden Company while beginning work on the company s newsletter.

BE SURE TO start your computer, but don t start Publisher before beginning this exercise.

  1. Click the Start button, point to All Programs , point to Microsoft Office , and click Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 .

  2. In the New Publication task pane, click Publications for Print to display the list of options.

  3. In the New from a design list, click Newsletters .

    The preview window shows the newsletter samples.

  4. Scroll down the preview pane, and click the Brocade newsletter style.

    Three things happen when you make your selection. First, the Newsletter Options task pane appears. Second, the Brocade newsletter s first page appears, ready for you to reformat it. And third, the Personal Information dialog box appears.

  5. In the Select a personal information set list, click Primary Business .

  6. In the My name box, type Kim Akers , and press [TAB] to move to the next field.

  7. In the Job or position title box, type Head Buyer , and press [TAB].

  8. In the Organization name box, type The Garden Company , and press [TAB].

  9. In the Address box, type 1234 Oak Street , and press [ENTER] to move to the next line. Then type Seattle, WA 10101 , and press [TAB] to move to the next field.

  10. In the Phone, fax, and e-mail box, type Phone: 206 555 0100 , and press [ENTER].Type Fax: 206 555 0101 , and press [ENTER]. Then type Email: kim@gardenco.msn.com , and press [TAB].

  11. In the Tag line or motto box, type How does your garden grow?

  12. Select the Include color scheme in this set check box.

  13. Click the down arrow to the right of the Select a color scheme box.

    The default color scheme for this newsletter is Olive. When you click the down arrow, you see lots of other color scheme options.

  14. Click Moss .

  15. Click the OK button.

    Troubleshooting  

    If you have entered personal information in Publisher before, click the Update button instead of the OK button.

    The information you just typed is inserted into your newsletter, which uses the color scheme you selected.

    Troubleshooting  

    You might have to zoom in to see your information and color scheme clearly. On the Standard toolbar, click the down arrow to the right of the Zoom box, and click 100%.

    Publisher retains the information and will insert it into any other document you create. You will not have to enter the information again; however, you can change it at any time.

    Tip  

    To change the information you entered into a personal information set, on the Edit menu, click Personal Information.

  16. Click the Save button.

    The Save As dialog box appears.

  17. Navigate to the  My Documents\Microsoft Press\Office 2003 SBS\Creating folder, and in the File name box, type TGC-NL . Then click Save .

  18. On the File menu, click Close.

    The newsletter closes , and Publisher displays the Start screen.
