Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g is newly revamped for Oracle Database 10g and introduces a great deal of new functionality, much of which revolves around new features in Oracle Database 10g. This chapter will talk all about the new features in Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g, including the following:
Introducing the redesigned OEM architecture
Changes to installation of OEM
Key new features in OEM
Introducing the revamped OEM home page
New OEM administration and maintenance features
Introducing Oracle EM2Go
Other OEM new features
Most of OEM is now redesigned in an Internet-enabled three-tier architecture based on HTML (as of this writing, some aspects remain Java based). You can now connect to OEM from any web browser and manage all of your databases and systems from the browser interface. You can even connect to OEM via your PDA! The Java console is gone, and thus the necessity of installing a client software is removed.
OEM comes in two basic flavors. The first, Oracle Enterprise Manager Database Control, is installed with every Oracle database. If you are using Oracle Real Application Clusters 10g, then you may want to install the second flavor, Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control, a separate product installed on separate media. Figure 9-1 depicts the basic architectural overview.
There are several components associated with OEM in Oracle Database 10g, including the following:
The server tier
The client tier
The middle tier
Communication components
