The Story Makes a Spiritual Power Palpable

When you posit in a film or a game that there are spiritual forces in the world, you can make that spiritual force seem quite real by giving a key character who possesses the spiritual force power or influence over others, even over those who might be much better armed.

Gandalf, in Lord of the Rings, is not afraid of those who wield mighty weapons. Obi-Wan's, Luke's, and Darth Vader's use of The Force to overcome others who have more firepower makes The Force palpable. Similarly, at one point in Crouching Tiger, Li holds a stick and fends off Jen, who wields a sword.

The spiritual power a character manifests doesn't need to emerge in fighting, however; it can also emerge just through the character's inspirational nature. For instance, at one point in Crouching Tiger, Li touches Jen's forehead, and we can see that, at least for a moment, some kind of wave of understanding sweeps through her.

At another point in the film, because of Li's perfect "spiritual balance," Jen can't dislodge him from a thin tree limb on which he stands with serenity, no matter how much she shakes the branch. There are many other such moments in the film. Like Obi-Wan, Li makes the spiritual world palpable.
