Summary


This case study uses an architectural road map to help document the vision of the N1 Grid and to provide assistance during the implementation phases. The N1 Grid system can be implemented in many ways, each phase building on other phases, or it can add value by simply introducing parts of the vision, as necessary. ZYX-WV is able to achieve cost savings, enhance availability, and improve its time to market for new services.

  • Phase 1 focuses on cost savings, improving reliability by automating common functions, and enhancing the telemetry provided by the system to improve decision making.

  • Phase 2 focuses on additional cost savings by expanding the role of automation, including the building of more complex environments and applications, and by providing the basis for the strategic flexibility implemented in the next phase.

  • Phase 3 focuses on strategic flexibility, resource sharing and control, and additional cost savings by aligning the IT systems with the business needs.

ZYX-WV is successful because it has well-documented business goals, uses a steering group to minimize problems, builds consensus, and uses a phased implementation plan to achieve the N1 Grid vision.
