The animal on the cover of Building Wireless Community Networks, Second Edition is a Carolina parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis , the only parrot native to the United States. These foot -long, multicolored birds, with their green bodies and yellow and orange heads and necks, were voracious eaters of fruit and grain seeds . This behavior led to their wholesale destruction as agricultural pests. Although they were once found all over the southeastern United States, the last known Carolina parakeet died in the Cincinnati Zoo on February 21, 1918.

David Futato designed the interior layout. Joe Wizda converted the files from Microsoft Word to FrameMaker 5.5.6 using tools created by Mike Sierra. The text font is Linotype Birka; the heading font is Adobe Myriad Condensed; and the code font is LucasFont's TheSans Mono Condensed. The illustrations that appear in the book were produced by Robert Romano and Jessamyn Read using Macromedia FreeHand 9 and Adobe Photoshop 6. The tip and warning icons were drawn by Christopher Bing.
