Importing Pictures from iPhoto

iMovie can easily import photos you've scanned or taken with a digital still camera. iMovie 3 makes this process easier by giving you access to your iPhoto library of pictures.

To import pictures from iPhoto:

  1. Click the Photos button to switch to the Photos pane (Figure 9.1).

Figure 9.1. All the pictures in your iPhoto library are accessible from within the Photos pane.

  2. Your entire photo library is shown in the preview area. If you want to access a specific photo album, choose its name from the popup menu.

  3. Click on a photo to select it for importing.

  4. Set the clip's length by using the Duration slider or type a value in the Duration field (in timecode's seconds:frames format).

  5. Drag the picture from the Photos pane to the Timeline, where it appears as a regular clip (Figure 9.2).

Figure 9.2. Imported photos appear in the Timeline as video clips.

graphics/tick.gif Tips

  • Check to see if the Ken Burns Effect is activated before you import still photos (see "Adding Motion with the Ken Burns Effect," later in this chapter). If you want the photo to appear without any motion applied, uncheck the Ken Burns Effect checkbox if it is active. Or, you can type Command-period to cancel the effect after the image imports (the render status bar on the clip disappears).

  • You can add multiple photos at once: Command-click to select the ones you want, then drag them to the Timeline.

  • The number to the right of the popup menu indicates the number of pictures in the selected photo album.
