Hiring Family and Friends

Asking your friends and family to pitch in is great, especially if you need them only periodically. But be aware that hiring loved ones can be trickyor worse. Remember, you're running a real business, and sometimes, you need to make business decisions. As they say in mobster movies, "It's only business." Your business decisions and choices are not personal, but your family and friends might not see it that way. Let's take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of hiring family and friends.

Advantages of hiring family:

  • Family members and close friends might be more committed than the average employee: They might see your business as an extension of the family and want to see it grow.

  • They will often work nights and weekends, if necessary.

  • You know them well and are familiar with their capabilities and shortcomings.

  • You trust them with the most important and delicate elements of the business, including cash and inventory.

Disadvantages of hiring family:

  • Other employees might feel that there is nepotism, especially if friends or family are given a higher position or increased pay.

  • Family could take advantage of their status because they know it will be hard to fire them.

  • Family issues could be brought into the workplace. The line between your personal life and professional life might become blurred.

  • Your close relationships with your family and friends might turn sour if business becomes personal.

Make sure that the person you hire actually has the skill set to perform the duties. Have a detailed job description so there are no misunderstandings or surprises. If possible, have friends and family members work under managers who are not related to them.
