Chapter  5.   Overview of Indexing and Searching Content

By now you should understand that building up an index is a resource- intensive task ”not only on the machine that gathers all the information, but also on the remote systems from which information is indexed. Wouldn't it be useful to combine different indices to set up an even bigger index, or to dedicate a machine to do just indexing?

That is exactly what SharePoint Portal Server provides. With the creation of a new workspace, you can specify that the workspace is just used to crawl data. Document management and portal functionality are disabled to free up resources for indexing. Though this is a per-workspace option, it will typically be applied to dedicated servers, as the idea is to split the load of indexing, document management, and the portal across different physical machines. Therefore, you will come across the term Dedicated Content Indexing Servers, or Dedicated Index Servers.
