In this chapter we discussed the key features of the core document management capabilities within SharePoint Portal Server. The key features discussed were check in, check Out, and version control. We discussed how document profiles can be used to associate metadata with documents, as well as how document types can be used to allow for more efficient searches for desired content. We discussed the differences between standard and enhanced folders, and which features are supported within each folder. The publishing and approval process was discussed to highlight the approval methods , such as One After Another and All At Once. We provided a high-level overview of role-based security, the roles that exist, and how users are assigned to roles within a workspace or folder. Lastly, we discussed how Web discussions could be used to conduct threaded Web-based discussions about a document, even though an end user might not have appropriate access to the document itself.
