Deploying SharePoint for a Single Business Unit ”Overview

Regardless of whether SharePoint Portal Server is deployed for the benefit of a specific business unit or across an entire organization, it serves to assist an organization in getting the most out of its existing content, while effectively capturing information in new ways that add value and help an organization make better use of its data. In the previous chapter, we saw that planning a SharePoint Portal Server deployment involves a host of activities. Here, we will drill down into those activities and see what it takes to deploy SharePoint Portal Server for the benefit of a single business unit, or SBU.

A portal solution designed for the benefit of an SBU differs from an enterprise-wide solution in a multitude of ways ”the fewer and usually very specific business requirements that the portal will fulfill, the breadth and scope of data residing under the umbrella of the portal, the physical location of typical users hoping to leverage this data, and so on. In the next few pages, we will explore deploying SharePoint Portal Server in support of different SBUs at a single company.

Whether an SBU or enterprise implementation, supporting 10 users in a single business unit or an entire company across the globe, deploying Microsoft SharePoint Server requires addressing the previously identified deployment activities:

  • Business goals and requirements

  • Building the technical support organization

  • Hardware vendor selection

  • Solutions architecture

  • Security plan development

  • Developing the workspace

  • Preparing the dashboard site

  • Addressing change management

  • Preparing for go-live

  • Planning for post “go-live support

It is merely the scope and application of these activities that differ . For example, developing a single workspace and dashboard facilitating collaboration for a department differs dramatically from deploying fifteen workspaces on Portal Servers installed across multiple sites. Much of the same "project plan" may be applied regardless, of course, but departmental or single business unit SharePoint Portal Server applications will tend to be much smaller in scope and size .

To jump right into deploying SPS across a complex enterprise environment, please see "Deploying SharePoint Portal Server Enterprise-Wide," p. 578.

In this chapter, we cover laying a foundation for a secure and well-performing SBU SharePoint implementation in terms of the following sample deployments:

  • Leveraging team services in support of a small project

  • Sharing content across a product engineering group

  • Providing search services for a product support group

  • Creating a document management system for a training department

  • Providing collaboration capabilities in support of a marketing organization

To make the application of these SharePoint services and capabilities meaningful, we will follow SmallTime, LLP (or simply "SmallTime," a fictional entity) through planning and deploying SharePoint Portal Server to meet specific business needs satisfied by the services and capabilities outlined previously.
