Chapter 19. Managing Indexing
Now that we have introduced some of the underlying components of the indexing process, the performance counters that are available to monitor the health of the index become easier to understand. The following performance objects may be of interest to you:
Microsoft Gatherer server-wide counters of indexing activities
Microsoft Gatherer Projects workspace-specific counters of indexing activities
Microsoft Search server-wide counters about query activities
Microsoft Search Catalogs workspace-specific counters about query activities
Microsoft Search Indexer Catalog workspace-specific counters about the index
SharePoint Portal Server Subscriptions workspace-specific counters about the subscription service
A number of counters are present for each of the performance objects. The Administrator help gives a couple examples to trace down some problems. Alternatively you can use the Explain button for each of the counters (see Figure 19.9) to get more information for the selected counter.
Figure 19.9. This figure shows some performance data gathered during a crawl. The Waiting Documents counter is of interest to see how many URLs are already found, for example as links, but still need to get indexed. If this number is 0, the crawl is completed.
The counters of the Indexing Service do not apply for SharePoint Portal Server.
