Even on teams that are performing well, one or more members may become disruptive to the team’s progress ... or just make being on the team an unpleasant experience.

What to Do:

  1. Refer to Chapter 9 to see if part of the problem you’re having on the team is related to goals, roles, or procedures.

  2. Look at the checklist in Tool 8-1 and see if you can identify the difficult team member’s behavior.

  1. Recognize the positive side of the behavior and build on that.

  2. Try the suggested approaches for dealing with the negative aspects of the team member’s behavior.

  3. When you need to do something about the behavior during the team meeting, refer to Tool 8-2 for how best to proceed.
