Chapter 16 - Importing and Linking Data to Access

3 4

You aren’t limited to working with Microsoft Access data in an Access database. You can use the power and sophisticated interface design tools of Access to work with data from a variety of other formats—including Microsoft programs such as Visual FoxPro and Excel and non-Microsoft databases and spreadsheets such as dBASE, Paradox, and Lotus 1-2-3—by importing or linking to Access. And the flexibility doesn’t stop there—you can also import text files, XML data and schemas, data files created in an ODBC-compliant database, and even Microsoft Outlook information such as contacts, calendars, and tasks.

This chapter focuses on the methods you use to import and link data to Access. The first part of the chapter shows you how to work within the Access interface to import and link data, and the second half discusses ways to import and link data using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) coding techniques.
