Running Outlook 2003 for the First Time

The first time you launch Outlook 2003, you need to enter some initial information and choose whether to create a mail account. Double-click the Outlook icon on the desktop or click the icon on the Start menu to display the Outlook 2003 welcome screen. Click Next to display Figure A.4.

You don't have to create an email account to use Outlook. You can still take advantage of Outlook's Personal Information Management (PIM) features without an email account. If you don't want to configure an email account, click No; otherwise, click Next to display Figure A.5.

Select the type of mail account you want to create. You can choose from the following list of accounts: Microsoft Exchange Server, POP3, IMAP4, HTTP, or Additional Server Types. After you choose the type of account you want to create, click Next. A dialog box similar to Figure A.6 will appear. The specific settings in the dialog box will depend on the type of email account you chose to create.

There might be several screens of information you need to configure to properly set up your email account. When you've completed setting up your email account, Outlook will launch for the first time.

If this is the first Office program you launch after installing Office 2003, you'll be prompted to activate your copy of Office 2003 with Microsoft.

You can choose to activate over the Internet or over the telephone. Activating over the Internet is a very short process and does not require you to transmit any personal information to Microsoft other than your country. If you have problems activating over the Internet, select activation by telephone and call the activation toll-free number to activate Office. If you don't activate Office, you'll be able to open an Office application only 50 times before Office switches to reduced functionality mode. In this mode, you cannot save, print, or edit documents. If you choose not to activate your installation of Office immediately, every time you open an Office application, you'll be reminded to activate your product and informed how many more times you can run any Office product.

NOTE

If you configured an Exchange account to use a local copy of your mailbox, it might take several minutes before all of your items are downloaded and available for use. On average, a 40MB mailbox will download completely in 5 10 minutes over a typical high-speed network connection.
