How Creativity Won Over Cancer

Grace McGartland is the president of a company called Thunderbolt Thinking and the author of a book by the same name. She teaches corporations how to come up with creative solutions to whatever problems they may be having, for example, how to help their people get through a merger, how to implement a change in procedure, or how to get employees to work in teams.

Several years ago, McGartland was diagnosed with cancer. "I had to make a choice," says McGartland. "I could choose to shrivel up and die, or I could find a way to get through this illness. I chose to find a creative way to live. I knew this was going to be a tough ordeal. So I drew a picture of a huge wave sweeping over the shore. I made copies of the picture and sent it to everyone I knew, along with a letter asking that whenever I went in for chemotherapy, everyone visualize that wave sweeping over me and pulling the cancer cells out.

"I also drew a picture of a woman with hair. I envisioned how my hair would look when it all grew back in. I put that picture on a bulletin board in front of my desk and I looked at it every day. And you know what? I just turned 49 and I'm the only one in my family who doesn't have grey hair!"

It is the creative potential itself in human beings that is the image of God.
