11.1 Preparation

11.1 Preparation

It is said that a failure to prepare is preparing to fail. With that in mind, take your time to plan and prepare for the deployment of your cluster. Start with the Cluster Preparation Checklist and Worksheet from section 4.8 to develop your plan of deployment, and then execute your plan.

11.1.1 Planning on Adding Another Cluster Member

All elements to adding members to a cluster are carefully discussed in Chapter 4. Please review Chapter 4 for more information and again, please use the Cluster Preparation Checklist and Worksheet as a guide to planning your cluster.

11.1.2 Getting Ready

You should start with at least one single-node cluster that has been successfully configured. Assuming you have planned and prepared to add a member to the cluster, you are ready to add a new member to a cluster. The following subsections cover some last minute items.

11.1.2.1 Add or Delete One Member at a Time

As it is so very easy to add a new member or delete a member, it is important to note that you should completely add or delete a cluster member before initiating another add or delete of another cluster member. Why? To avoid any cluster quorum problems. In the context of the cluster, it is vital that quorum be maintained and adjusted as necessary as we add or delete cluster members.

11.1.2.2 The New Member Boot Disk

The boot disk or boot_partition for the cluster member to be added should be identified by now. If not, please review Chapter 4 and your plan for the deployment of the cluster.

At this point, use the information from section 10.1.2 to properly partition the member boot disk and write an appropriate disklabel to it. After the disklabel has been written, it should have the appropriate in-use fstype for the partitions used for the member boot_partition, swap, and the cluster status partition. If this is not the case, please refer to section 10.1.2, review your plan for the deployment of your cluster, and again create the appropriate disklabel.

11.1.2.3 Initialize SRM Console Variables

If the boot-related SRM console variables for the new cluster member have not already been initialized to prevent the new cluster member from booting during the installation, then this should be done before starting the process to add that member to the cluster. For more information, please see section 4.5.3.
