Inserting Other Objects into OneNote

There are a number of other objects you can insert into OneNote pages. For example, you can insert information from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For more information on inserting information from other programs, see Chapter 20, "Office 2003 Integration."

Inserting Windows Symbols

OneNote has a wide variety of built-in symbols from Windows you can use within your note pages. To insert a symbol, choose Insert, Symbol to display Figure 13.10.

There are a wide variety of symbols available. You can use the scroll bar on the right of the Symbol window to scroll up and down the available symbols. To speed things up a bit, you can use the Subset drop-down box to select a type of symbol, such as Geometric Shapes.

To insert a symbol, click the symbol with the mouse and then click the Insert button. After you insert a symbol, the Symbol window remains open, allowing you to insert more symbols. You can actually click in your OneNote window and move the cursor to another note container or another position within the existing note container and insert another symbol. When you're done inserting symbols, click the Close button.

Inserting Symbols by Using Character Codes

A large number of the symbols available in OneNote can actually be inserted through the use of ASCII codes. An ASCII code is a four-digit numeric code associated with the particular symbol. To see which symbols have ASCII codes associated with them, use the drop-down marked From on the Symbol dialog box. Choose ASCII (decimal). The Symbol dialog only shows symbols that have an ASCII code.

For example, in Figure 13.11, the % symbol has an ASCII code of 37. To use the keyboard to insert that symbol at any time, hold down the ALT key and press 0037 on your number pad. When you release the ALT key, the symbol is inserted.

In addition to ASCII codes, you can use a similar method to insert Unicode symbols. As previously shown in Figure 13.10, the Unicode character code for the diamond shape is 25CA. To use your keyboard to enter this symbol, type the Unicode character code in a note container and press Alt+X.

The Absolute Minimum

In this chapter, you learned about a wide variety of items you can insert within your OneNote page. You can insert

  • Web content along with the URL for the original Web site

  • URLs to return to Web sites you visit at a later time

  • Pictures and graphics to enhance your pages

  • ClipArt

  • Symbols to illustrate mathematical operations

In the next chapter, you'll learn how to create outlines in OneNote. Outlines can help you organize your thoughts and notes. You'll learn how to create a new outline and create an outline from existing text.
