The concepts behind business process management are best described in terms of the standards developed by BPMI.org. The core component of the system is the BPMS. This can be thought of as a database for business processes in much the same way that a relational database management system is a database for enterprise data. The standard for querying business processes is BPQL, which is analogous to SQL in the traditional database world. Finally, the language for modeling business processes is BPML.

Since a business process management system is an engine for business services orchestration, it must be able to integrate with a number of enterprise infrastructure and application components. These can include messaging systems, application servers, object request brokers, transaction processing monitors, databases, and a number of enterprise packaged applications. While some of these systems may be unfamiliar to the business stakeholder, the main takeaway is that a BPMS serves as a top layer of integration that can help to separate business process from business application logic and can help to orchestrate these business processes across applications, users, and devices. In performing this orchestration, there will be numerous touch-points to both people and applications. The amount of effort in implementing these touch-points will be highly dependent on the particular BPMS and the complexity of the business process in question. The business process management approach is not a magic bullet in terms of ease of integration, but offers a new paradigm with benefits such as increased agility and reduced cost of ownership, as discussed later in this chapter.
