Bonus Tutorial 4: Using Paste As Mask to Build a Jigsaw Puzzle in Fireworks, by Donna Casey

 < Day Day Up >

Overview

The Paste As Mask function in Fireworks MX is one of the most useful features in the program. As you've learned, a mask may be either a win- dow through which you can see a portion of an element or behave as a cover to hide a portion of an element. Paste As Mask works as a window, using the path or outline of a shape to hide every bit of the element that is outside of the path's boundaries.

You can use this feature to build a jigsaw puzzle. The puzzle is made of shapes created by using Combine Paths® Union and Combine Paths® Punch. After the shapes are all made, you can use them as the mask. The mask pieces were created in place until the entire puzzle image was covered, as shown in the following figure.

Create the pieces through the use of the Combine Paths functions.

When all the pieces are done, place each mask piece on its own frame by selecting them all and choosing Distribute to Frames from the Frames panel options. A layer with the image for the puzzle is also present in every frame. You accomplish this by double–clicking the layer with the image and checking the Shared Layer option. Double–click again and remove that option. At the prompt, the contents of the layer was saved to all frames.

Tip

Another way to get the image placed precisely in all frames is to select it and choose Copy to Frames® All from the Frames panel.
