Outside curve shapes

 < Day Day Up >

Draw the curved shapes on the outside of the main drawing:

  1. Open tracing2.jpg.

  2. Using the Pen tool with a stroke of 1 and no fill, trace this shape.

  3. Move the shape off the tracing shape. Change the fill to Cone and place gradient color boxes, as shown in the following figure using these colors from left to right. (The colors were sampled from the tracing image.)

    • #5799C4

    • #6EBECD

    • #C5C1E9

    • #B8747B

  4. From the Effects menu, choose Bevel and Emboss® Inner Bevel, and use these values:

    • Bevel Edge: Smooth

    • Size: 5

    • Softness: 3

  5. From the Effects menu, choose Shadow and Glow® Inner Shadow with these settings:

    • Distance: 10

    • Softness: 10

    • Angle: 21.

  6. Make a copy of the shape and paste. Change the fill of the bottom copy to black, remove the effects, and lower the opacity to 40%. Add 2 pixels to the height and width and press the up–arrow key once and the left–arrow key once (see figure).

  7. Shift+select the two new shapes; then group, copy, and paste them into your working document. Copy the shape twice and flip the second one. Refer to the following figure for placement.

  8. Using the Pen tool with no fill and a small stroke, draw a shape as shown and fill with a linear gra- dient. For the color, use black, dark gray, white, and dark gray as shown in the following figure. Adjust the gradient handles until it looks like this image. Repeat for the opposite side.

  9. Use the Pen tool with the color of light gray, Basic, Soft Line a size of 2, and an Edge of 50. Draw a line right on the top edge of the left gradient shape you just made.

  10. Clone this line and press the up–arrow key two times. Change the stroke color to dark gray. Repeat for the bottom, except make the line against the edge black and the lower line light gray (see figure).

  11. Repeat Steps 9 and 10 for the right side (see figure).

  12. To add highlights to the curved shapes, use the Pen tool to draw the contour of the top of the left side. Use an Air Brush Basic, stroke of 20, edge of 100, and white.

  13. Move this path to just above the shape in the Layers panel so it's below the gray gradient you added.

  14. Use the Path Scrubber Subtractive tool on each end to taper it.

  15. Make a clone, change the stroke size to 10, and move down 2 pixels. Make any adjustments to the edges to taper them.

  16. Repeat Steps 12-15 for the inside curve on the right side. This figure shows the highlights added to both curves.
