The version of ColdFusion that ships with Macromedia Studio is a special developers' edition designed to let you preview your ColdFusion pages and applications on a local server. In most cases, this is all you need to get started working with the program, because it's likely you'll be developing and testing your pages locally and then transferring them to a live environment that also supports ColdFusion. But it's also important to understand that there are two different versions of ColdFusion Server, and many different options available among them.
This is the most common version of ColdFusion Server, and the one you're most likely to find deployed in hosted environments. It includes all the infrastructure needed to run ColdFusion applications, and an embedded Java server based on Macromedia's JRun. It comes in two varieties: Professional, which is the standard, and Enterprise, which includes additional security and performance features designed for large-scale Web applications.
This special version of the program is designed to Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition, or as its more commonly known, J2EE. With this version, ColdFusion MX runs on top of an existing J2EE application server, such as IBM's WebSphere. This version is most often found in environments where ColdFusion pages will be used in conjunction with J2EE applications.
