Overview

Dreamweaver is extensible, meaning it has the ability to add new features, functions, and capacity to your application through the use of extensions. An extension is an addition to the Dreamweaver program. It can be as simple as a command that builds a null link, an object button in the Insert bar that quickly builds a commonly used HTML table, a behavior added that helps show and hide layers, or as complex as a series of objects, behaviors, and commands all in one extension that builds a fantastic (and powerful) array of navigational elements.

For years, scripting gurus have been modifying their copies of Dreamweaver to include functionality not provided in the retail package and, quite often, giving away these modifications (with or without directions) to the general public for free. With Dreamweaver 4, Macromedia joined hands with these visionary coders and put together the Macromedia Exchange — an online repository of objects, behaviors, commands, and other assorted functions. In Dreamweaver MX, the legend continues, and the scope and power of extensions freely available on the Web is yours as a gift. Now there's no need to reinvent the wheel; chances are that someone has already packaged whatever you need as an extension, and all you need to do is find it, download it, and install it.
