Adding Form Objects

 < Day Day Up >

To add form objects to your form, place your cursor in the form and click the desired form object button in the Form tools of the Insert bar. You can also use Insert ® Form Objects ® and choose the type of tag appropriate for the information you want to display or collect.

Tip

If you have a form object with specific values that you use often, consider building your own Form Object Tool button or saving the code as a snippet. Creating tools and snippets is covered in Chapter 43.

Choosing the correct form object

Certain form tags are conventionally used for specific tasks. For example, Radio buttons imply mutual exclusivity; if you want to offer a group of choices from which the visitor can select more than one option, use a check box. When space is an issue and you want the visitor to choose only one option from a group of options, use a pop-up or drop-down menu, instead of several radio buttons.

Labeling form objects

Provide a label or call to action for each form object. For example, clearly identify each text box or each radio button in a group. If a value is required for a form object, mark that label with an asterisk and explain the meaning of the asterisk in a paragraph above the form.

Habitat Alert site   The first form added is a search function which could be powered by any server-side technology, such as ASP or ColdFusion. A label for the form function has been added already. A search function requires a text field and a form button at the minimum:

  1. With your cursor in the form, choose Insert ® Form Objects ® Text Field.

  2. Press right arrow and use the Insert bar Form tools to add a Button to the area (Figure 38-4).

  3. Save the page and keep it open for the next exercise.
